We are going to HAVE FUN! I will be customizing your lessons to your needs, your skill level, your age, and most importantly, what you would like to learn on the Banjo. Go ahead and get in touch, and let's try a session together!īackground and expertise in Bluegrass, Americana, Country, Old Time, Swing and Jazz, etc.Īlso winner of 21 championships, including 2 national titles in Winfield, KS. I find great joy and pride in helping a student reach their goals and surprise themselves with their own potential. Increasingly, however, I turn my focus toward private teaching. I am lucky to have been involved and contributed to a handful of IBMA and Grammy-nominated albums. I spent 7+ years performing, recording, and giving workshops with talented acoustic acts based in Nashville and the southeast. My journey as a musician which began at the age of 8 has now carried me to 48 states and a dozen countries, including 4 tours in continental Europe. Rely on my 15 years of music teaching experience to save you countless hours of bewilderment and frustration! From the rank basics to traditional tunes, to timing and tone, technique and theory, I can show you what you need to make your journey easier. Looking for someone to help you reach that next level? Whatever your stringed instrument, I can guide you there. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you! In addition to technique, we'll learn plenty about the history of the banjo, music theory relevant to the banjo, and the many, many styles of music that we can play on it. From there we'll work toward your goals whether you want to play in traditional or progressive styles all while focusing on solid technique, rhythm, and lots of listening. Using a combination of tabs and ear learning, within the first few lessons you'll learn the basics of picking, rolls, chords, melodies, and the philosophies of bluegrass banjo. Though I specialize in three-finger/bluegrass styles, I'm also proficient in teaching clawhammer and even tenor banjo. I've studied Scruggs, melodic, and single-string style with the likes of Noam Pikelny, Greg Cahill, Bela Fleck, Kristin Scott Benson, and Alan Munde (my favorite!). Over 10 years of teaching banjo I've taught students from beginners and casual bluegrass lovers to professional musicians and theater performers.
